Types of Research Methods in Education

There are several methodologies that could be used for conducting educational research. A type of methodology that’s selected by the researcher is often emanated directly from the research question being asked. Correlation research

This research involves a quantitative study of relations among variables. However, the cause and effect relationship can’t be determined in this research and is a notable feature of this research. Those engaging in correlation research don’t manipulate the data. A researcher can measure the student-teacher ratio in every classroom of any school district and measures the average achievement of the student. For instance, if the student-teacher ratio changes, the student achievement is also likely to change.

Experimental research

In this type of research, the participants are assigned one of the several treatments randomly. One of the basic experiments involves random assignments to a group and then studying the results with a group that’s not exposed to the experiment. For instance, examining the effects of a video presentation could be analyzed against the effects on a group that didn’t get to see the presentation. There would be certain parameters for to judge the findings.

Quasi-experimental research

This is a commonly used research method in education. Here, researchers attempt controlling the differences between several non-randomly assigned groups in various ways. For instance, a researcher interested to compare the effects of traditional grade three reading curriculum with the effect of enhanced versions that could include homework assignments.

Qualitative research

This type of research represents an exhaustive framework to conduct educational studies. While quantitative research covers measurable variations among and between variables, qualitative studies involve holistic descriptions of teachers and learners in a naturalistic setting. The results and then tabulated for further research.
