Teacher Training Requirements


Teacher training requirements are those processes and methods which are involved in the training of a teacher so that he or she is qualified enough to teach students at different levels. There are certain exams that a trainee teacher must pass along with the submission of assignments and projects and based on his or her performance in these lines, the trainee becomes qualified to be a teacher. A teacher training programme has both practical and theoretical training, both of which are necessary to become an able teacher. Besides additional training, someone who is interested in being a teacher naturally must have a good educational background with a bachelor’s or master’s degree depending on which level classes he is teaching.

What are the educational requirements for teacher training?

The educational requirement for teacher training varies based on the standard where he or she is teaching.

  • For kindergarten and elementary level, trainees are taught the basics processes of teaching and also given training in subjects like math, science, language, social studies, art, music, physical science etc
  • Teacher trainees are taught various methods of teaching and their implementation and also a basic course on the child psychology
  • Teachers teaching in secondary level must have at least a bachelor’s degree in the field they want to teach besides getting trained in a teacher training programme of 1 to 2 years
  • Teacher also must have the fundamental knowledge of computers and their application in teaching methods or in general

What are the additional requirements for teacher training?

Although teachers have the educational qualifications which show their knowledge of the subject and are given training about the basics of teaching in training programmes, it is very important to have and improve certain skills:

  • Teachers must be able to communicate well and inspire students with their teaching
  • They must be able to identify the individual differences among children and modify their teaching methods accordingly

Where and how can one get trained to be a teacher?

Teacher training courses are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council. Although it is not compulsory for one to get trained here, it is easier to get a license this way. There are many colleges and universities which collaborate with the state government to set up vocational or professional development school where one-year training programmes involving both theoretical and practical work are offered to those who have completed their bachelor’s degree.
