Sushi Chef Education Requirements

Sushi chefs are food specialists who prepare appetizing sushi cuisine from ingredients such as fish (salmon, tuna, octopus, eel etc), white or brown rice, soy sauce, seaweed, crab, shrimps, avocado, cucumber, sea urchins and asparagus. Cutting skills are a primary requisite to become a sushi chef.

Sushi chefs are also required to possess good knowledge in preparing all varieties of meat, poultry and seafood. Sushi chefs should also be able to train, supervise and manage kitchen personnel and should also be able to order perishable and non-perishable food, based on quality and availability.

Individuals aspiring to become sushi chefs should have the following educational requirements:

  • Though high academic degrees are not required for obtaining a position of Sushi Chef but one must hold a high school diploma as it is a prerequisite for admissions into culinary school.
  • Candidates can learn culinary art from community college or technical schools or universities that offers coursework in hospitality.
  • Candidates will be taught the correct usage of kitchen equipments, proper food storage, nutrition, knife techniques and inventory procedures.
  • There are programs that require candidates to complete an internship before graduation.
  • There are schools that offer 2 month sushi chef professional course and also advanced classes for about 3 weeks, for candidates who are looking forward to improve their skills.
  • Candidates can obtain certification to prove that he understands the details of hygiene and sanitation.

Sushi Chef Degrees, Courses and Certifications

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent is must.
  • Certification of Sushi Chef from recognized Culinary schools
  • Culinary training from any culinary art school.
  • Certification of hands-on experience from the National Restaurant Association.

Sushi Chef Qualification and Training

Sushi chefs should have good knowledge in Japanese and Asian cuisines. They should also possess good presentation skills along with cutting skills and should be able to handle and control the prescribed hygiene standards. They should be able to handle peak hours at the restaurant and do multi-tasking. Sushi chefs are expected to be innovative and be able to create new recipes of sushi.
