Ship Captain Education Requirements


A ship captain is the most important person in a ship because he is responsible for making all the decisions when it comes to the safety and comfort of the passengers and the crew. They must have knowledge of operating the ship and various other functions, besides handling business matters especially in cargo ships, and making sure that they don’t face any natural or man-made hazards.

For this, he must have proper training and knowledge of these areas so that he can do his job properly and maintain the equipment in the ship. One requires a combination of degrees and at the same time enough work experience so that they work their way up to this post.

Ship Captain Education Requirements:

  • A ship captain must have a bachelor’s degree in subjects like marine engineering, marine transportation or maritime technology
  • After he finishes his course, he must have work experience in a ship as a deck member for at least 3 or 4 years
  • He should also get trained in computers so that he can operate the ship and the various equipment which handle navigation and the management of facilities
