Research Chef Education Requirements


A research chef is someone who is not only a chef and an expert in cooking but is also an expert in researching different type of foods and ingredients in order to create a new menu. He can be part of a restaurant’s culinary team or can be hired by the place to prepare new experimental dishes by traveling to different places, trying out their cuisine, using his skills to make fusion dishes to suit the local palate, find out what the customers are looking for, study how different ingredients react to each other and so on.

They play an important role in making food interesting and inventing new recipes. There are many common types of dishes available now that were a result of research conducted by established chefs and are extremely popular now.

Research Chef Education Requirements:

  • You have to go to a culinary school to get trained as a chef or work in a reputed restaurant for at least five years to be qualified for a job like this
  • Besides qualifications and experience in cooking, you may also get a degree in food science, product development or do internships
  • There are degree programs offered by the Research Chefs Associations which you can pursue at many universities
  • Part of the course is also a series of workshops which give training to the chefs on how to become a research chef, after which they sit for an exam to get certified

Research Chef Qualification and Training:

A research chef needs to pursue a combination of culinary training and knowledge of food science to understand the different components of ingredients, how they react with each other and what is the end product and how that can be used in the creation of new recipes. They may also need to study molecular gastronomy or nutrition to be aware of the technical area of their job. Training is provided by schools accredited by the American Culinary Federation.
