Professional Engineer Education Requirements


A professional engineer is someone who has acquired theoretical and practical knowledge in engineering and has the license to practice as a professional engineer (in any field) and apply his knowledge thus gained in independent designing, planning, advising, supervising engineering projects. A professional engineer has to meet a number of requirements like qualifying examinations, meeting experience requirements, etc. to obtain the license.

 

Professional Engineer Education Requirements:

 

  • A professional engineer must have a Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program that is accredited by the American Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET). This is a four year program.
  • One needs to have strong mathematical and scientific abilities for engineering programs. The student will choose his area specialization in the last two years of the program. You may be required to submit projects and sometimes, also gain experience as interns.
  • Apart from fulfilling the education criteria, the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying required a candidate to pass two examinations to become a licensed professional engineer. The first exam, Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination can be taken by the students in their final year. Students who pass these examinations are called Engineering in Training or Engineering Interns. The second examination is the Principals and Practice of Engineering (PE). This exam is taken after the candidate acquires four years of work experience after passing FE.
  • The Bureau of Labour Statistics requires professional engineers to obtain credit for continuing education, attending seminars and working for projects with the state’s approval.

 

Professional Engineer Degree, Courses and Certificates:

 

  • High School Diploma
  • Bachelor’s Degree- Engineering Program, accredited by the American Board of Engineering and Technology.
  • Licensing examinations conducted by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying.
  • 1st examination- Fundamentals of Engineering, 2nd examination (after four years of experience post FE) – Principals and Practice of Engineering.
  • Education and work experience credit.

 

Professional Engineering Qualification and Training:

  • The students’ fundamentals in science and mathematics are strengthened throughout their 4 years of engineering program. Various topics in physics biology, chemistry and mathematics are covered.
  • In the two years, students are taught to work in engineering labs and handle lab equipments and apply the knowledge gained from their course. This will be represented in their senior year design project that the college will require them to submit.

The salary of a Professional Engineer varies with the area of specialization. Average salaries across all fields of engineering lies between $50,000- 60,000 pa.
