Payroll Clerk Education Requirements


A payroll clerk education must emphasize on developing a candidate who can perform the salary management related functions for all the employees of the organization. A payroll clerk is responsible for providing clerical level support to human resource and payroll management team in a company. These candidates are required to maintain salary records for the employees and to ensure that employees are paid the correct amount of salary. Hence their education must focus on developing the skills required to perform these job activities.

Although these candidates are not required to possess very high education but basic education in finance and accounting is mandatory to apply for the job position in the capacity of payroll clerk.

Payroll Clerk Education Requirements:

  • A payroll clerk must have passed high school with mathematics as the major subject.
  • Associate or certificate level courses in financial accounting make a candidate eligible for the position of payroll clerk.
  • These candidates must also have proficiency in typing and computer based skills.

  • Associate degree in finance or accounting
  • Payroll certifications like Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC).
  • Certificate level courses in bookkeeping, timekeeping and payroll administration

Apart from the formal education, these candidates are also required to possess the right skill set to perform their job responsibilities in an efficient manner. These candidates are required to perform most of their work on computers; hence they must be proficient in data entry, data filing, and basic computer knowledge. They must also possess knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

The job of payroll clerk is an entry level job and does not require higher degrees. But certain certification programs offered by American Payroll association like CPP and FCC can enhance the suitability of a candidate for this job position. The knowledge of spreadsheets and word processor software also helps candidates to acquire the job of a payroll clerk.
