Optical Technician Requirements

Optical technician makes contact lenses or eye glasses according to the prescriptions given by an optician. Accuracy and detail are important to be effective as an optical technician. An optical technician may also be asked to create optical tools like telescopes or binoculars. They have to work mostly in laboratories and will be provided training to execute the work as per requirements. The education requirements and job requirements of an optical technician are described below:

Education Requirements:

  • Employers would prefer candidates to complete at least their high school or graduation.
  • Candidates can better their chances of selection by opting for courses like optometry, ophthalmology, etc.
  • Additional courses in mathematics and computer sciences also help an optical technician to carry out the tasks with ease and precision.
  • Candidates should possess valid license and certification to start working as an Optical technician.

Job Requirements:

  • Candidates will have to work under optometrists and ophthalmologists.
  • Candidates should have an eye for detail, good hand-eye coordination, and work with dexterity.
  • The concepts of optometry and optics should be very clear and sound.
  • Candidates should have good vision to be able to read and analyse the test results.
  • Ability to work in a team and executing the orders of optometrists or ophthalmologists are some of the most sought-after traits.
  • Optical technicians should be able to read the prescriptions, make the contact lenses according to the measurement specified, repair damaged eye glasses and make optical instruments.
  • The candidate should be well aware about the latest developments and technology in optical field.
