Ophthalmic Technician Requirements

An Ophthalmic technician is one who assists ophthalmologists in preparing for treatments, administers medication to eye patients, analyses tests done on patients, conduct eye examinations and supports the ophthalmologists during surgeries. An Ophthalmic technician works as per the orders of ophthalmologists. They need to possess requisite experience to execute all the tasks. They need to supervise all the eye patients and hence need to frequently work overtime. Ophthalmic technicians need to be aware of all the instruments used to test and conduct surgeries on eye patients. Following are the education and job requirements needed for a person to become an ophthalmic technician.

Education Requirements:

  • Since the job of Ophthalmic Technician is a very technical one, the candidate need to complete high school and then take up specialised learning in Ophthalmology.
  • Candidates should possess certification in ophthalmology. They also need to get practical exposure in its concepts through live projects and internships.
  • Employers prefer to hire candidates that have at least 2 years of experience.

Job Requirements:

  • An Ophthalmic optician should have the practical knowledge of the concepts used in Ophthalmology.
  • Candidates should be able to work overtime.
  • Candidates should be able to administer treatments and medication to eye patients.
  • Candidates will be expected to take orders from Ophthalmologists and ensure that all work gets done within the assigned deadline.
  • Candidates should rely on their experience to take stand while handling critical patients and assist the doctors.
  • They need to know the standards and procedures used while handling the responsibilities of an ophthalmic optician.
