Neurologist Education Requirements

A neurologist is one who deals with surgery related to the brain and nervous system. In order to become a neurologist, one has to complete medical school, residency years as well as internship. One also has to be certified and licensed for practice.

There are different fields for one to practice in, but he has to complete the required education for that. There are medical schools which offer courses but the specialty is selected during residency years. One can opt for special courses during medical school.

Neurologist Education Requirements

  • One has to complete an undergraduate degree before applying for neurology courses. This requires four years of medical school. One can become a Medical Doctor or a Doctor of Osteopathy. There is a need to complete a year’s worth of internship and about eight months of internal medicine.
  • The internship will be followed by a three year residency program. This program is affiliated to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. This can be followed by a fellowship wherein the doctor can complete his or her sub-specialty.
  • In order to become a child neurologist, one has to complete two years pediatrics residency, one year internal medicine, a year of research and another year in pediatrics. The resident must also complete two years of pediatric neurology and one year of adult neurology.
  • There is a need to get certified from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. One has to become certified after completing residency. One has to pass all the state exams and practice medicine – written and oral. This also can be for psychosomatic medicine and child and adolescent psychiatry.
  • There is certification offered by the American Board of Osteopathic Neurologists and Psychiatrists wherein there is a need to graduate and have a state license of practice. One must showcase ethical standards and become members of the American or Canadian Osteopathic Associations for two years.
