Hotel General Manager Education Requirements


A hotel general manager is in-charge of the overall functioning and operating of a hotel. He is responsible for all spheres and hence, should be aware of how each department in the hotel works and functions. Hotel general manager education covers a wide range of academic studies, which include marketing, human resource management and economics.

There are many schools and university that offer undergraduate and graduate courses in hotel and restaurant management.   • To join Master’s degree program in hospitality, the person would first need to successfully complete a Bachelor’s degree
  • The person must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills as they may be required to deal and interact with the hotel’s customers

Candidates, who want to pursue a career in the hospitality industry as hotel general manager, must consider the following degrees and courses:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • A Bachelor’s degree in hotel and restaurant management which combines subjects related to finance, management and real estate
  • Taking courses related to specific areas of hotel and restaurant managements, such as private club operations or French tourism
  • Taking courses in mathematics, psychology and communications, as this could be a requirements by colleges and universities offering Bachelor’s degree in hotel and restaurant management
  • A Master’s degree in hospitality management which can cover a wide range of subjects, including recreation management, resort operations and business law. In addition, candidates would have to take mathematics and general business courses while pursuing their Master’s degree
  • MBA degree in accounting or management is an added benefit, as a hotel general manager should be well-versed in these two fields
  • Taking foreign language courses, as a hotel general manager should be able to help foreign guests, who have limited knowledge of English

Hotel General Manager Qualifications and Training

Besides formal education, to become a hotel general manager, the candidate also requires practical hands-on training. Usually most candidates work their way up the hierarchy and begin at low positioned jobs, as desk clerks. However, there are some boutique hotels that tend to hire their general managers from other hotel chains and expect them to have knowledge and appreciation of company’s corporate culture.
