Historian Requirements

The great minds which are capable of building up an imaginary bridge connecting the present with the past are popularly known as Historians. A professional historian assembles historic data by consulting past resources of information, such as, manuscripts, artifacts, letters, news files and several published and unpublished thesis and hence prepares a narrative based on these chronological accounts. The study and interpretation of the activities of various individuals or social, political, ethnic or geographical groups is his job. His analysis of the past is important for the present to frame a better future, by avoiding the mistakes of the past and following the achievements. A historian has a plethora of career options to choose from, such as, job of a teacher in schools and colleges, librarian, curator in museums, historical societies and archives, or even as consultants for commercial organizations. The following qualities are required in a historian.

Education Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s as well as a master’s degree in History is a must.
  • Historians generally specialize in a certain historical period or subject and a postgraduate degree in that field is highly preferable.
  • Candidates need to have basic knowledge of some related subjects such as geography, sociology, philosophy and economics.
  • Knowing foreign languages will prove to be an added advantage.

Job Requirements:

  • Candidate must have critical thinking skills to organize and evaluate historical traces.
  • The applicant must have the ability to understand authenticity and then present records, not merely gather and interpret them.
  • One needs to have excellent speaking skills, and, curiosity as well as patience to work as a historian.
  • Most importantly, candidates must possess a genuine love for the past.
