Heart Surgeon Education Requirements

A heart surgeon is one who is a specialist in treating and performing surgery for various kinds of heart ailments. The role of a heart surgeon is to perform surgery with a view to correct all kinds of malfunctioning of the heart. The surgeon is responsible for the heart condition both pre-operative and post-operative of the patient.

  • The students aspiring to become heart surgeons must complete an undergraduate degree program before going on to medical school.

  • Aspiring heart surgeons must also complete four years of medical school.
  • After graduating, all prospective surgeons must complete a general surgery residency and specialized internship.
  • Once this internship is completed, surgeons may sit for the American Board of Thoracic Surgery examination to become board certified.
  • Surgeons may also pursue an optional fellowship to further increase their skills in heart surgery.

Heart Surgeon Degrees, Courses and Certifications

The candidates, who want to pursue their professional career as a heart surgeon, must consider following degrees and certifications:

  • Good score in MCAT
  • A bachelor’s Degree from medical school, which includes subjects like Biology,Mathematics and Chemistry.
    • Apply for certification in cardiac surgery from the American Board of Medical Specialists.
    • When an accomplished and experienced cardiac surgeon, he may be nominated to be a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC).

Heart Surgeon Qualification and Training

Along with formal education,a heart surgeon will be qualified only when he/she has acquired equal amount of training in the field. After having completed four years in medical school, one must apply for a general surgery residency which must be followed by an additional 2- or 3-year internship in cardiothoracic surgery. Dexterity and physical stamina are essential pre-requisites for heart surgeons as their hands and feet are often at work for a long period of time.
