General Counsel Education Requirements


The general counsel education requirement should be focused on various aspects of organizational laws and corporate laws. As a general counsel, you will be working within an organization and your primary job will be to ensure that your company or firm is working within the law and following all state regulated and federal laws. In order to do so, you need to have knowledge of various state laws, Federal laws, company laws, country laws, and other laws like import or export, transaction, business processes, outsourcing, etc.

There is a lot of emphasis on Compliance with federal as well as state laws and hence the general counsel’s education should revolve around the same. The curriculum should also include several specialty areas including antitrust, trademarks, foreign affairs, international treaty, United States code, Statutes at Large, Administrative Procedure Act, and Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) among others.

General Counsel Education Requirements:

  • An aspiring general counsel needs to hold an undergraduate degree in law (L.LB) or Juris Doctor degree.
  • An aspiring General Counsel can also pursue a master’s degree in law (L.L.M).
  • In order to pursue a career as a general counsel, you will need to appear for the state bar examination in the US. You will need to clear four different exams, which include Multistate Bar Examination (MBE), Multistate Essay Examination (MEE), Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE), and Multistate Performance Test (MPT).

General Counsel Degrees, Courses and Certifications:

A general counsel needs to complete the following under graduate or graduate degree programs as well as sit for the state bar examination to enhance his/her work credentials:

  • High school diploma with overall good percentage.
  • Bachelor’s of Law (L.L.B) or Juris Doctor Program
  • Master’s of Law or L.L.M program
  • Post graduate program – Doctor of Law or Doctor of Juridical Science
  • Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) for license

General Counsel Qualification and Training:

As a general counsel aspirant, you can apply for internship with any private or government organization that requires the assistance of a general counsel. Initially you will be working as a trainee and under the supervision of a general counsel but the internship will help you to gain valuable experience and help you to understand the various processes involved.

The average annual salary of a general counsel can vary from $133,188 to $262,592. The median expected salary in the United States for a general counsel is $193,675.
