Executive Chef Education Requirements

An Executive Chef is the head chef and plays an important role in the kitchen. He is responsible for managing the kitchen and also has a creative role to play. He is the person who makes the menu, creates recipes and ensures that food is cooked and presented the way he envisaged it.

Students who want to become executive chefs in a food establishment, hotel or restaurant can opt for an associate or bachelor’s degree in culinary arts where they can learn to cook and present food in an appealing manager. After finishing their college or university, such students can get certified by the American Culinary Federation, and this will make it easier for the person to get a job as an executive chef.

Executive Chef Qualifications and Training

While having a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree is mandatory to become an executive chef, many chefs also get on the job training. They can work at a restaurant and have just one task to perform initially.

As they become proficient in that task, they are shifted to another. This continues until the person has learned all cooking tasks and is capable of taking on more advanced responsibilities. With time and experience the person will get promoted to an executive chef.

There are also apprenticeships available wherein a person can work as an apprentice under a qualified executive chef and learn the skills of the trade.
