Electrical Engineer Training Requirements

Electrical engineer training requirements are those qualifications and training one receives in order to become a qualified electrical engineer. Engineering is a specialised field and electrical engineering is a further specialisation. Electrical engineers work with different types of electric equipment, motors, wiring, circuits etc and study the internal functioning and design of these systems. They are mostly hired by research companies or electric equipment manufacturing companies to name a few. In order to be considered competent as an electrical engineer, one must pass several exams and get certain degrees.

What are the educational requirements for electrical engineer training?

A person interested in studying electrical engineering must choose subjects like physics, statistics, math, chemistry in high school. The educational requirements for electrical engineer training depends on the post one has applied for:

  • All engineering students must complete a 4-year Bachelor’s degree from a recognized government or private educational institute
  • The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology is responsible for accrediting all engineering programmes and besides colleges and universities, some courses are offered online too
  • Students can select the courses they want and also specialise in certain subjects like microwave engineering, power systems etc
  • Throughout the course, they are given training in both theory and practical work and often have to make assignments and do project work too
  • Trainees are also taken to many sites or factories to show how a motor or power grid works
  • Master’s degree helps students to get a better job as he gets an opportunity to study higher level courses like digital systems and also do research work
  • Master’s degree programmes are for two years and especially help if one has applied for a managerial post
  • One can also go for doctoral degrees if one is interested in teaching at universities or get into full-time research

What subjects are usually studies by electrical engineer trainees?

  • Computer programming
  • Embedded systems
  • Electrical circuits
  • Thermodynamics
  • Engine or machine technology
  • Robotics
  • Power systems

How does internship help in electrical engineer training?

Most universities or colleges give a chance to students to undergo an internship programme as part of the course or during the holidays. By undergoing internship, the student gets a chance to apply all the theoretical knowledge he has gained to practical situations. It also helps them to learn to diagnose and solve problems and work as part of team where the seniors guide them in real projects.
