Drilling Supervisor Education Requirements


A drilling supervisor is a person who works for the petroleum industries. His/her job is to plan and execute the boring of a new oil well. They are highly skilled as they make an estimation of the value of an oil well and also calculate the total expense for the job to be done. They make necessary arrangements of the equipment to be used, determine the number of workers that are required to do the job, set a deadline and also inspect the quality of work. To become a successful drilling supervisor a candidate should possess a number of character traits and various important skills. He/she should be able to communicate well, make prompt and important decisions and be able to solve any problem on their way. A candidate is required to have an engineering bachelor’s degree and should have an experience in other drilling jobs.

Drilling Supervisor Education requirements

  • A candidate should be a high school pass with science background.
  • A candidate should have a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in engineering or both.
  • A candidate must specialize in civil, industrial or mechanical engineering.
  • A candidate must have an experience working as a labour or assistants.

Drilling Supervisor Degrees, Courses and Certifications

Candidates can choose among the following degree courses:

  • Bachelor’s Degree of 4years in petroleum, mining, civil or mechanical engineering.
  • Master’s or Associate’s Degree  – Two years
  • M.Sc.in Petroleum or Offshore engineering.
  • Organizational, decision making and analytical skills.

Drilling Supervisor Qualifications and training

A drilling supervisor must be qualified from and engineering background. He/she should have an experience of working in the related filed. They are also required to complete on job apprenticeships so that they learn the trade well. A candidate is given a safety and survival training. This is small training that takes four to five days, which can be also be given on the site of work. This training covers environmental awareness, self and others safety, and how to give first aid to needful at the time of an emergency. Candidates must also pass the underwater escape course. This involves submersion and escape from the site in a sudden emergency.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics a drilling supervisor’s salary ranges from $57,000 to over $140,000. The amount of salary also depends upon the experience of the candidate, his skill sets, educational qualifications and other factors.
