Diagnostic Medical Sonographers Education Requirements

Diagnostic medical sonographers work in a healthcare facility and use various ultrasound techniques like magnetic resonance imaging or MRI machines to create images of the human body, its organs and bones by sending sound waves which bounce back and display images. They use these images to diagnose various diseases and conditions which help the physician to know what is wrong and he can suggest a treatment procedure accordingly.

The educational requirements of a diagnostic medical sonographer include a certification or degree program which gives training on the sonography techniques, medical terminologies, medical ethics etc, after which one can also get registered to improve their resume and the chances of getting a job.

Diagnostic Medical Sonographers Education Requirements:

  • At school level, you can take subjects like biology, life sciences, physics and chemistry in high school as they will give you knowledge of the human anatomy and also how sound waves work.
  • You can study a two-year associate’s degree program or four-year bachelor’s degree program where you will learn about the different styles of sonography, ultra sound techniques, the human body,  patient care, medical terms etc.
  • You can do a 1-year course from a vocational or community college or also opt for a certification course which provide similar training in a shorter duration

After you finish your studies, you can get certified and registered with the Diagnostic Medical Sonography, which is not a compulsory criteria but it shows that you have adequate training needed for the job and gives you can edge over others in the job market. Also, check if the college or institute you choose to study in is accredited by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography or not.
