CNC Machinist Education Requirements

The CNC machinist education requirement should be technical in nature. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control and hence, the education curriculum should focus on imparting knowledge on machining various products using computer programs. The computers used in assisting in machining process are installed with a program known as the M code or G code and the educational curriculum should not only enhance your skill sets on the same theoretically but practically as well. Some of the important areas of education include knowledge of setting up and operating machine tools, conducting progressive machining operations, basic math’s skills, knowledge of American metric standard, practical knowledge of fixturing, understanding of statistical process control, and making adjustments for holding tolerances etc.

CNC Machinist Education Requirements:

  • An aspiring CNC machinist needs to hold a high school diploma and should have high scores in General Educational Development (GED) tests. Diploma holders need to show a minimum work experience of 2 years in order to apply for a CNC machinist position.
  • An aspiring CNC machinist can also pursue an under-graduate degree in mechanical engineering.
  • There are specific certification programs available that will help you to pursue a career as a CNC machinist by providing necessary or relevant knowledge. Certification programs in Statistical Process Control and CNC machinist will be an added advantage.

CNC Machinist Degrees, Courses and Certifications:

A CNC Machinist needs to complete the following diploma or under graduate degree programs as well as get the necessary certifications to enhance his/her work credentials:

  • Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) or Bachelor of Engineering (B.E)
  • Certificate of Statistical Process Control (SPC)

CNC Machinist Qualification and Training:

As a CNC Machinist aspirant, you can get hand-on or practical experience through workshops which are a part of most certification course curriculum. Through the workshops, you will receive both practical and theoretical knowledge of blueprint reading, practice basic machining, computer aided design and manufacturing, CNC manual programming, set-up and operation, handling Haas mills or Haas lathes, working on master cam CAD systems and understanding machine tool technology.
