Child and Youth Worker Education Requirements


A child and youth worker treats or counsels individuals who are suffering from emotional, behavioral or physical problems. Thus the education requirement for a child and youth worker should teach the individual aspiring to work as a child and youth worker about understanding the above mentioned problems and how to help the victims suffering from those problems. The course pursued by a child and youth worker should teach the individual about life, behavior and coping skills.

A child and youth worker should be familiar with the educational, emotional, development and recreational needs of young people as well as children. There are various diploma programs that an individual can pursue. There are also graduation programs offered by many universities. There are also vocational as well as specialized training an individual will have to pursue in order to become a child and youth worker. At times community programs are also offered by community colleges for these candidates.

Child and Youth Worker Education Requirements:

  • A child and youth worker should have a high school degree or a high school diploma.
  •  A child and youth worker should have a bachelor’s degree in the field of child and youth care.
  • There are also vocational training program that a child and youth worker has to undergo.
  • There are also certificate and diploma available to individuals aspiring to be a child and youth worker

  • Bachelor’ degree in Human Services with specialization in Child and Youth Care
  • Bachelor’ degree in  Child and Youth Care program
  • Four year degree program in Child Studies
  • One year certificate in Child and Family Services
  • Two year diploma in Child and Family Services
  • Vocational training in Human Service Professional program
  • Two year diploma in Child and Youth Care Counselor program
  • Two year diploma in Child Care Worker program

Child and Youth Worker Qualification and Training:

In order to qualify as a child and youth worker, an individual may need some sort of work experience. It can be an experience of working with children as a volunteer in a part time or a full time job. They should also have training in first aid skills and CPR training.

The salary of a child and youth worker depends upon the experience of the candidate and his/her educational experience. These individual may also earn on an hourly basis where they may get between $10 to $35 per hour.
