Caterer Education Requirements

A caterer’s education must focus on developing a candidate with apt amount of subject knowledge related with their field and should equip the candidates with adequate practical exposure. A caterer is a professional who is responsible for preparing food to be served in parties and other social gatherings. These candidates are similar to chefs but their work environment is quite different. The education for these candidates must develop these candidates with food preparation and presentation techniques, safety, hygiene and sanitation precautions to be followed while preparing the food.

Their education programs must also focus on developing basic business knowledge & ethics, and management practices so that they can run their catering business effectively.

Caterer Education Requirements:

  • The candidates looking forward to become a caterer must have passed high school or must have completed an equivalent education.
  • These candidates can also undergo formal education in the field of hospitality through associates or under graduate degree in this field.
  • These candidates must also possess good knowledge about food preparations, health and safety standards etc.

Caterer Education Degrees, Courses and Certifications:

The candidates who want to pursue their career as caterer must complete following degrees and certifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Associate’s degree in Science with major subject as Culinary Management.
  • Bachelor’s degree in science, hospitality or hotel management
  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, management or hospitality
  • Certified Professional Catering Executive (CPCE) certification offered by National Association of Catering Executives (NACE)
  • Diploma or certificate level courses in Catering, Food preparation, Food Sanitation and safety, Pastry arts, Menu design etc.

Caterer Education Qualification and Training:

The formal education for this career is not mandatory, but it can prove as an added advantage for the candidate. But necessary skills related with the field of food, hospitality and beverage are quite important to pursue career in the catering industry. The candidates who want to initiate their own business as caterer, are required to possess a health department approved business location and a business license. These candidates must have practical experience in event management and catering industry. These candidates must also possess adequate skills in food preparation, which they can learn for various vocational courses and hands on training.
