Cardiovascular Surgeon Education Requirements


The cardiovascular surgeon is one who operates on the heart. Diseases surrounding the heart vessels and other cardiovascular nerves are treated by this surgeon. Hence, there are certified programs which include extensive training courses such as four years of medical school followed by another four years of residency.

There are fellowships offered for those who want a more specialized training but this is after the completion of residency course. The surgeons in this field are one of the most highly paid and in demand within the medical profession.

Cardiovascular Surgeon Education Requirements

  • One has to become a board certified cardiovascular surgeon in order to practice. This involve training for four years in medical school, but prior to this one must also complete undergraduate courses in biology, math, physics and chemistry.
  • After the completion of the bachelor’s degree one must also pass the Medical College Admissions test.
  • This will be followed by four years of medical school in order to become a doctor of medicine. This includes two years of laboratory and classroom training and in extensive fieldwork with patients under the supervision of licensed doctors for two years. The patients are examined and diagnosed. The students are familiarized with preventive, chronic and rehabilitative care so that the resident has an all-round understanding of medicine.
  • He or she must pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination to legally practice medicine in the U.S. This is a four year residency program and this is followed with a two year residency program with a cardiac surgeon. This fellowship program allows the resident to develop the surgical skills in order to practice pediatric, thoracic and adult cardiovascular surgery.
  • The candidate must also pass the American Board of Thoracic Surgery exam.

The training for cardiovascular surgery begins during the two year fellowship program where the resident has to operate on various patients and observe their chief of surgery in action as well. There is a need to practice in order to perfect such complicated procedures.
