Bank Teller Education Requirements

The main job of bank tellers is to help the customers who make deposits, transactions, or withdrawals. This is the right job for the people who want to help with peoples savings. For this job to be right for you should be honest, reliable and you should have numerical and counting skills along with a customer oriented personality.

Educational requirements

In the majority of the cases there is no need for a college degree because you will get training on the job. However there is need for a high school diploma. Although you don’t need a college degree, it might be helpful to have and associate or bachelor’s degree in finance, math or business.

If you would like to increase your chances of getting hired, you should be fluent in another language. There are a lot of institutions who have foreign customers as well and the tellers need to be able to help them too.


The majority of the banks don’t require this, but there are some schools that offer education programs for future bank tellers. If you attend one of these, in the end you will get a certificate. During the classes you will receive information about bank operations, ethics, bank regulations and teller duties.

Training on the job

When you start working you will be introduced to the computer applications and you will learn about cash counting along with check processing. Interactions with the customers are also important in this field. The new employees must get familiar with audit, security and the compliance procedures.

You could also learn about some special services, such as U.S. Savings Bonds redeeming. Issuing traveller’s checks and bank-certified checks along with taking coin orders all belong to the special services that a bank offers.


Among the duties of a bank teller you will find making money orders, taking loan and utility payments, and issuing license plate stickers. You will have to grant access to the clients to their safety boxes. It is possible that you will have to work in the sales area in order to attract more customers to the bank you are working in.

Although being a bank teller seems to be easy, you have to know that this job involves a lot of responsibility simply because you are working with money and in the majority of the cases it is the clients’ money that you are working with.
